The pan flute

The pan flute is a flute that is made up of a number of tubes of different lengths closed at the bottom. Bamboo is often used as material for the South American pan flute. In addition, there are also pan flutes made of wood, glass or metal and plastic. The name pan flute comes from the Greek god Pan. A pan flute is played by blowing air over the tube against the edge. Each tube thus delivers its own tone. By tilting the pan flute, the flutist can lower the tone with some practice.

The range depends on the number of pipes and can vary from one octave to about three octaves. The pitch is (mainly) dependent on the length and (to some extent) on the diameter of the pipes. The pan flute can be tuned a bit by flattening small wax balls on the bottom of a pipe. A pan flute is fairly easy for a hobbyist to make yourself, from bamboo or, for example, PVC pipe.

The pan flute is mainly played in Southeastern Europe, in Romania, and South America. The shape of the pan flutes differs depending on the region from which they originate. Originally, the pan flute was found in many parts of the world, as evidenced by archaeological finds, but has fallen into disuse in many areas. Romania and the Andes are regions where the instrument has been preserved. (Source Wikipedia)

Here is a song I made with A midi panflute I hope one day I can combine the real panflute with my Native American flute

On Marek Tesluk's website you can read he has been making musical instruments since 1993  pan flutes, pan flutes, recorders and various wooden flutes. In their work they try to preserve the original, often 'rough' sounds of those instruments, while at the same time using modern knowledge to improve their design, dimensions and finish. Most of our instruments are made of resonant woods impregnated with natural substances so that there is no risk of them being damaged by exposure to moisture. The electronic tuning and wide selection of ranges and keys of these instruments means they can be used by professional musicians. (Source Website Gibonus)

Hoe bespeel je de panfluit

Playing the pan flute certainly takes some practice

The right way of blowing is important. This flute is made in Poland and I bought it in the Netherlands at panflutekopen.nl. I am very satisfied with their service, they called me because the flute I had bought was now also available with a dark edge or I had a preference and yes Iiked the dark edge more.

What I had misjudged myself was the size measured with the roundness, it is 40 cm and the height is 49 cm.

The sample sound will have to wait for a while because although I get some sound out of it now, it's not good enough to record yet. Here's another link to an interesting piece about Marek Teśluk .'s company

The wood

The maple used for this flute is mountain maple that grows in the Polish Carpathians. In Polish

language   there are two names for maple - Klon - is the typical maple and - Jaword - the mountain maple. Polen has al lot of production forest but also 23 national parks.
