Nr. 066 Moldavian Kaval B

The Kaval of Henk van Glabbeek

Been looking for a different kind of flute for a while to combine with my Indian flutes. But many flutes have an open top to blow into and are therefore much more difficult to play. On Facebook I saw the Moldavial Kaval that Henk makes, this one originally also has an open top, but to make them more accessible, the top is closed with a small hole to blow the flute. Henk mainly makes open blown flutes such as the various Neys, Shakuhachi and Bulgarian Kavals. The Moldavian Kaval is similar in blowing technique to the Native flute, but in terms of atmosphere it comes very close to the oriental Ney. Besides building and playing flutes, Henk also plays various other instruments and gives performances in which he takes you on a musical trip arround the world

Made In Holland

It is always nice to meet a flute maker from my own country. Henk also likes to know more about the person for whom he makes his flutes, so we also had a nice conversation about mutual interests. He also informed me well about the length of the flute and what would play nicely for me. That is certainly important because especially with complaints on my hands you should avoid extra effort. He therefore recommended a B because it is slightly shorter than the A. The sound is really beautiful and mysterious and very easy to play.

Phyllostachys – Nigra-Boryana

Also called snakeskin bamboo occurs in large parts of Asia.
It is not a black bamboo as the name suggests, but a large upright bamboo with thick matt green culms, on which brown/black spots appear in the second year. It can grow up to 3 meters high and the young shoots are edible
