Native American style flute music

Indianen stijl fluitmuziek

Your first Native American  flute

You are probably about to buy a flute or it has piqued your interest so maybe these tips will help you Unfortunately there are not many shops to buy a flute if you don't live in the USA

So you will have to make your choice online. Start with a flute that is not too big, eg A minor. With the High Spirits flutes you usually get an instruction booklet with a video. These flutes are for sale in the Netherlands at, among others, the Indianenfluit.nl and fluitwinkel.nl

On the internet you can find everything about the flute, unfortunately almost everything is in English.

Fluteopedia is a website where you can find all information about the flute from various scales to the history, a website that contains a wealth of information.

You will also find many YouTube videos about how to play the Indian flute. Clint Gloss has a channel where you'll find a wealth of teaching materials.

There are different techniques to reproduce the sound of the flute in different ways. 1 of these techniques is the vibrato I thought this sound sounded great but I didn't know what it was called so I searched for a movie how to make this sound. In the beginning it always didn't work, but without me realizing it, the vibrato came out of my flute one day.

The Indian flute has five or six holes if you keep the third hole from the top closed on the flute with 6 holes, all other tones will always harmonize well with each other. Because then you have a pentatonic scale.

Breathe in and out a few times

Start by covering all the holes with your fingers, blow through the whistle and remove one finger from the hole starting with the bottom hole. Leave the third hole from the top closed. Do this until all tones sound good. If this goes well try different combinations.

Try not to think too much but play from your heart and improvise, this is the best way to start. Try to relax your hands and fingers as much as possible.

If you have the possibility, it is wonderful to play outside in the woods or other quiet place where there is not too much wind, otherwise the flute will not work. It is a beautiful way to become one with nature around you.

Background music Nature sounds are always a good combination with Indian flute think of wind, sea, birds.

Percussion instruments such as drums, shakers, etc. are also a good combination

Of course you can also use midi instruments to make background music.

Hydrogen is a free program.

You can find background music with multiple instruments

On Clint Gloss's site on Bandcamp you can listen to or download the music and use it for a performance or flute circle.

Wikiloops: Here you can find music from musicians all over the world in various styles and try to play along. The music is for personal use only.

Different scales

You started with the pentatonic minor scale

But you'd be surprised how many other scales there are

Eg Celtic, Spanish, Byzantine etc. etc. you can find them on https://www.flutopedia.com/ under scales and then scale overview
